Tranquillity--Aliveness
Peace--Joy
Stillpoint--Movement
My work is contemporary and expresses the music, harmony and mystery of the universe, the underlying aliveness of our world, the music of being within all things. May you see deeper into yourself and into the world, the underlying invisible parts, because of my art.
I often use the circle as a symbol for peace: complete, whole, the still-point. Stillpoints are stopping places. They draw you into other dimensions. They are powerful and energizing in their stillness. They leave you refreshed and feeling alive and “tuned in”.
Joy is expressed with the aliveness of the lines and colors and shapes. The lines, etc., bring out the stillness and peace of the circle and the circle plays off and accents the movement and joy in the lines, shapes and colors, creating a tension that flows back and forth between the two opposites. I sometimes simplify to capture the essence of the subject.
The watermedia paintings emerge with no prior idea or theme. As soon as paint is applied to paper they begin the process of telling me what to do next. At some point in this process I become aware of a deeper meaning and they become symbolic. I then keep this in mind as I continue. Color is most important to me but the work decides the colors.
As far back as I can remember, I understood composition and the principles of art. In 1970 I met an artist/teacher who changed my life. While I had always drawn and painted I didn’t realize the deeper meaning of art. At that time I also started working abstractly.
I was born and lived most of my life in Michigan but for many years I have known that my heart was in Arizona. Circumstances permitted us to move here in 2000. In Michigan, besides having my work in a few galleries, I participated in many art fairs and my artwork was in many juried exhibits including one at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
