Richard Alan Smith was born in Broklyn, New york in 1931. He studied at Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn Museum Art School and Cartoonist , and Illustrators School of New York. After teaching art for awhile at New York's Phoenix School of Art, Richard embarked on a career as an artist.

His interior scenes are reminiscent of the dutch master Vermeer. He displays a superb control of light precise tonality and rich harmonious coloring. "I love to look at beauty, something from the past and capture it on my canvas because life is so fleeting, so fragile. I am so impressed with motion pictures and photography because it too captures a moment in life...foreverness!" And indeed, Richard's paintings capture a sense of atmosphere, poetry and foreverness.
